Kangaroo chief jumps ship

(By Richard Holway) I see that Ashley Highfield is to give up his position as CEO of Kangaroo to join Microsoft UK. (see FT 11th Nov 08 - Microsoft lures Kangaroo Chief) where he will become MD of their online and consumer division. This is yet another blow for Kangaroo - the video on demand/watch again JV between ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC. Already subject to delay because of a competition enquiry, Highfield had only been in post for four months.

I have huge respect for Highfield who I have met on several occasions - in particular his work at the BBC where he enabled me to achieve Holway's Martini Moment of being able to listen to The Archers "Anytime, Anywhere and from Any device". His finest hour was the launch of the BBC iPlayer which we use extensively in our household, thus bringing the broadband speed crashing to a standstill throughout our area of rural Farnham. Highfield is a rare Brit who has really changed lives through the application of technology.

Kangaroo's loss is Microsoft's gain. It's an inspired move and I await what he might achieve there with great anticipation.
